With us on coaches corner, KWBG going to talk some cross country today. Cass Morrison joining us Boone cross country had coaches. Tory Doors had a chance to run at Clear Lake last week, which by the way, Cass, you were one of few. There were so many meets that were canceled around the state. I know Ogden and mattered had been kind of scrambling to find something. You had to feel pretty fortunate to get the girls and guys out there last week. Yeah, Clear Lake was it was actually a pretty good meet for us to get into. It was a new destination, but it's also a district location. So I wanted the kids to have an opportunity just to kind of see what they could potentially be running on here in a month when we figure out where we're going, whether that's Clear Lake or Winterset.
So it just kind of gave them an opportunity to see them race against Clear Lake, because if we go to Clear Lake, Clear Lake will likely be there. So they get to kind of see what kind of competition they're running against. Well, let's start on the girls side of things, coach. I thought the competition was outstanding. I was kind of looking at all the teams that were there and the times as well. And goodness, I mean, three girls in the top 15 cast that that's a pretty good afternoon. Yeah, especially for Emma and Whit, they were happy with their time. Briella felt like she could have done she should have done better, but Briella was sick the week before. So illness is kind of like an injury. I mean, it's going to take a little bit to come back from, but she still went out and competed. So I mean, that's all I can ask of her depending or doesn't matter really what kind of condition she's in. She wants to compete. And so, I mean, to go sub 21 after being sick the week before is pretty good Were you happy overall with the team, coach? 121 points and you were in third place. Clear Lake looked like they were pretty darn good that day with 51 points. And then Denver was there with 100. What do you think overall as a team? As a team, I thought we did. I thought we went out and competed pretty well. Denver was a new addition that I found out that day. So I didn't really have time to kind of look to see what Denver had to provide in the race, but I knew Clear Lake was going to be a challenge to try and beat.
I guess Denver kind of took place of Humboldt, because Humboldt was supposed to be there and then they weren't. So, I mean, competition is competition. You still got to compete with everyone. So. Top three seems like it's been pretty consistent this year. And then we're kind of looking for, I guess, the time to start dropping for four, five and six. Overall, are you where you'd like to be right now, Cass? I mean, I know we'd like to be more consistent with at least a meet a week, but Mother Nature isn't always our best friend for that. But overall, the girls about where you'd like to see them as we get ready for the calendar to switch next week. Yeah, I think so. Obviously, it'll help if we can get a few more times to drop.
Emma and Whit were the first two that have really PR'd since our first meet at Johnson, so that was encouraging to see.
I mean, in years past, it's kind of been about this time of year when we've started at drop times. But when we go from course to course, because we used to run at Humboldt, which Humboldt would have been this past Monday, but it would have been canceled anyway. So we wouldn't have had that challenging course. And then tonight, we should have been at Rolling Story, and they went ahead and canceled on Monday. So tonight would have been about the time we would have started to see times drop as Rolling Story is kind of an easier course than say Humboldt. Clear Lake is a challenging course, but from times dropping, even just looking at other girls' times from other teams, like Clear Lake, Clear Lake dropped some major time in their runners. So Clear Lake's course is seen as a fast course. And I don't know whether it was the temperature that day we ran at Iowa State or Iowa State even changed a little bit of their course. It was actually a little longer than what it has been in years past. But times just weren't as fast at as state as what we had usually seen. So I think that extra 0.5 or 0.05, 0.06 kind of made a major difference in times. But I think once we go to Ogden, hopefully we can run on Monday. We'll start to kind of see some more times drop. Boys' side of things, then coach 12th place finish for them. You were led by Austin Felder, had a 45th place finish. Jonathan Myers pretty close behind, and then Cam Lehmann about there as well. I feel like the boys' program is starting to take those strides forward, though, Cass, you got to feel pretty good about what we've seen the last couple of weeks from them, I think. Yeah, it's been good to kind of see their progress as we've reached this point in the season. Much like the girls, Austin and Jonathan reached their season PRs. Austin finally broke 19 minutes, getting into 1856. And Jonathan's just right there.
But if we happen to go to Clear Lake, this was just kind of a good measuring stick as to where we are and then where they could finish or how much faster they get here in a month if we go back. But yeah, I know the boys have always been good at just kind of being close together. It's just been willing to get those times to drop. That's been the challenge. But I think they're making strides in the right direction. Yeah, it feels like times are feeling a little bit better. Places I don't usually worry about this time of year, to be honest with you, Cass, I'm kind of looking at the times and just doing some comparing. I feel like we're getting there. I mean, to the point where once that calendar hits October and it's about go time, I know that that's where you're really worried about times and we're getting close, I think. Yeah, yeah, we are. And, you know, we just don't have that many races in the month of October as what we do in September. And so it's like we only have three races in October and then it's and then it's district. And so it's just kind of like we don't have that much time to kind of continue those strides. But it doesn't mean that these upcoming races aren't important to kind of continue that progress to kind of show me where we're at and where each individual shows theirself at. We're getting there.
