Habitat Ground Breaking in Boone Sunday

KWBG 04/04/18

BOONE, Iowa—Another local family is beginning the journey of building their own home with Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity, and the public is invited to the groundbreaking celebration scheduled for Sunday, April 8, 1:30 p.m., at the building site, 515 McPherson Street in Boone.

Lindsay Fitzgerald and her young son, Charlie, are Habitat’s 2018 partner family.  They will be joined at the event by many local family and friends, along with what is expected to be a large outpouring of support from Habitat for Humanity volunteers from across Boone County.  All will celebrate the fulfillment of a dream for Lindsay to build and purchase a safe, decent and affordable home.

Having been income-qualified and coming from substandard housing, Lindsay will work a minimum of 300 hours alongside Habitat volunteers.  Completing homeowner education classes is also a requirement.

Once construction is complete in October, the family will begin a no-interest mortgage with the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.  Their payments will help to build homes with more families in coming years.

Bob Dennis of Boone will be leading his fifth and final Habitat house as Project Manager.  An experienced construction contractor, Bob will assist volunteer crew leaders, manage subcontractors, order materials and ensure final quality.

This will be the 28th partner family assisted with a new or renovated home through the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate since its beginning in 1995.  The Helping Hands home repair program has assisted an additional 45 families with critical repairs across Boone, Greene and Guthrie Counties.

In addition to reinvested Habitat home buyer mortgage payments, financial support for this project comes from the Leonard A. Good Trust, the Boone County Endowment Fund, the State Housing Trust Fund, the US Bank Foundation, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines, plus many local individuals, churches and businesses.

Those interested in volunteering during construction can contact Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity at 515-432-1168.  Their local office is at 720 Story Street in downtown Boone.

Habitat for Humanity is a community-driven Christian housing ministry dedicated to providing opportunities for simple, decent and affordable housing for families in need, both locally and around the world.
