KWBG Senior Spotlight: Bek Anderson, Ogden Senior

KWBG 10/02/26

Transcript

Joining us on our senior spotlight on KWBG, we're gonna chance to talk to Beck Anderson, senior at Ogden and tell you what, Beck was running through his schedule with me before we got started here. And Beck, I don't know how you have time to A, be a kid, B, do anything outside of school, and C, A and B, go see those again. My man, you are a busy guy. Yeah, I mean, it takes quite a bit of time management. I mean, you have to be willing to do your homework during your study whole periods and not just goof off and practice your instrument, practice singing, memorize your lines, all that stuff and be willing to put the work in when it comes to practice time for like running or playing baseball. But as long as you kind of are smart with your time, you're able to do it and have some fun while you're at it. All right, Beck, you gotta tell me, managing your time. People have told me posted notes. People have told me they use apps and stuff. People, their phones. Some people, believe it or not, Beck have told me they just know what day they're supposed to do stuff. How do you manage your time, Beck? Tell me how you keep all this stuff straight. Well, my dad is actually a really big help with this. He got me set up on our Google Calendar. So there's, if you take a look at our Google Calendar, it's just filled to the brim with all sorts of stuff all the time, so you have to be places. And it's not just me, it's like my siblings too, because L is gonna be at volleyball practice, K will be at cross country with me, Aden will be at soccer practice. So you know, we're all over the place. So it's up to me and my dad and my mom to just make sure we know where we're going at all times. And that helps out a lot. Oh my goodness, I mean, and you're, and we haven't even mentioned either, Beck is super busy when it comes to band. He's got choir, he's the lead in the musical. My goodness, where do you find time to, A, practice lines, B, do, I mean, you got a lot of stuff. Beck, there's only 24 hours in a day, my man. Yeah, so I'll kind of walk you through like the end of my day schedule. So after all my classes and stuff, I usually have, as school gets out at 3.05, then I, sometimes I'll do homework right after school, because then I have cross country at 3.30. And then after that, oh, sorry, I'm also in all state too. So it goes back, it goes cross country from like 3.30 to usually like five o'clock. And then I'll go home and I'll shower and I'll come back and I'll have all state practice at like 5.30. And that goes to like 6.15 and then musical from 6.30 to nine some nights, so. Beck, my goodness, you are a busy. So how, so tell me, what do you do when you get away from all this stuff? Like, do you have free time to just go be Beck Anderson? Yeah, I mean, I love, so one, it's kind of a career choice too, but I want to be a pilot. Okay. Yeah, am I, am I free time? I'll, I'll like read books about piloting or I go to Boone through Sparta aviation and Boone and I'll go do flight lessons. And I just enjoyed up there. You know, it's a freeing feeling. You're up in the air. Everything looks so small and like perfect. If you're up in the air, all the fields look like, they look like perfect squares and rectangles. And it's, it's just pretty cool up there. So I'm guessing Beck, and maybe I'm wrong on this. Have you done any solo yet or you don't have enough hours yet? I'm not quite there yet. I'm, yeah, I'm, I think I'm at my tail wheel endorsement right now and the weather's not been the greatest. So I haven't been able to get up too often, but I'll be soloing here probably in a few weeks. So Beck, are you at a point and then you're gonna, you're gonna have to educate me because I don't know a ton about flying. I know that it freaks me out when I get ready to take off but I'm great when we land. You gotta tell me though, Beck. So when you're up there with your co-pilot, does he or she just let you take the reins and away you go and they kind of help you along with some stuff or how does it work when you're up there, not quite solo yet? Yeah, so for like the first few lessons, cause there's, there's dual controls. So you have, I'm up in front and Dale, my instructor is in the back. And so he kind of, he's helping me out. He's having me feel what he's doing with the controls for like the first few lessons. But as we progress, you know, do more repetitions, like one of our last, our last lessons that we did was, we just took off and landed like, I think eight times. Oh, wow. Just one lesson. So like we did it together for like the first one cause it's the hardest part of flying, I would say. I bet. And so he's having me like do like the radio calls. And, but like when we came to like the last, the last two repetitions, I was just doing it by myself. So it was pretty cool that I'd, I know how to land and take off in a plane by myself now. So. Okay. Beck, this is not something that you just woke up one day and you were like, Hey, I kind of want to be a pilot. How did this, how'd you get interested? So me and my grandpa build model planes, you know, like the plastic ones. Yeah. You know, yep. So he's got, he's got like all the planes that you could think of. He's got B17s, he's got P51s, he's got P38s, all the stuff hanging up in his basement. And I thought they were the coolest thing ever. So I started building them. And then, oh, I just, I don't know. I thought they were cool. And we go to, we would go take trips. And I would always request that we stopped at like an Air Force base or an air museum. And I think just like being around all that stuff just made me so interested that I wanted to do it for myself. So if you, man, usually, Beck, usually I ask this question later, but we might as well jump into it right now. When graduation is over and whatnot, what do you kind of see your career going to be? Yeah, so I was, I haven't kind of like thought out my head. I don't know how smoothly it's going to go. I mean, you never do. Nope, you don't. So I was, I believe I was recently accepted to University of Dubuque. So I was planning on going there and pursuing a professional flight degree and then going straight into the airline workforce after that. So you want to be, you want to be flying all over the world if you could. Yeah. Beck, that is a very, I don't, you might be the, I've been doing this for like 20 years, Beck. And people have told me that they like flying and they've told me they like going on trips. You might be the first one that's ever told me they wanted to be a pilot. Yeah, I like to be unique, you know? That's cool. That's super unique. I promise you that much, I promise you that much. So that's what you get a chance to do with your free time. Tell me about some stuff you're looking forward to your senior year. I know homecoming week is obviously going on right now as we speak. What are some other things you're looking forward to senior year? I mean, obviously jazz band, we've made it to, we've made it to jazz championships every year for like the past four years. So I'd like to keep that going, make it five. And I play lead alto. It's probably my, that's another one of my hobbies. I mean, I know I do it for school, but I just really enjoy jazz music and all that stuff. I play a little bit of piano too. So I'm looking forward to that. I'm also hoping that I can make it to state in both track and cross country this year. It's looking pretty good. So I just have to, you know, stay locked in, keep practicing, keep running, keep pushing myself. And I have a pretty good shot at making it. Well, you were busy in the off season back. I've got parents that live in Oregon. So I stopped and see them every now and then. And I saw you and a couple of the fellas out running quite a bit. And I knew it was you because A, I remember you'd from baseball and B, I saw Anderson on the back, your shirts. I knew it must have been you as well. You guys were pretty busy this summer. I saw you guys out quite a bit. Oh yeah, yep, summer running. I think I got, my sheet was for, I think 450 miles, I think this summer. That's a lot of payment time, buddy. Yeah. What do you like to listen to when you're out running? Are you, somebody likes to listen to certain music? Are you a podcast guy? What do you got? I'm actually not a big music listener when I'm running. So I'm always usually running with, sorry, Miles and Luke Fisher. Sure. So we will sometimes play games out while we're running. Like, well, we have certain games that we play when we're running. So, or we're just talking about random things. So I've never really actually gotten into listening to music while I run. Well, you wouldn't if you got two other guys that had got conversation with you, right? Yeah. That would be rude. That would be rude. Ah, Beck, we already talked about what the future looks like for you. So we're going to wrap this up with what I always liked my seniors to do. And that's kind of helped people out when it comes to piece of advice. And if a freshman came up to you, Beck, and they said, hey, I want to have a great four years at OHS, what do you think you might tell them to do? I mean, I guess this could apply to both. I mean, you just got to find yourself a good group of friends that'll stick with you and are good for you. And I mean, you want to keep your eyes open for any opportunities. Don't shut something down just because you don't think it'd be cool or fun. You'll meet some new people there. You'll find experiences and you'll do things that you would never even thought of to do. I wasn't even sure. I didn't come into high school knowing that I wanted to be a pilot. But just through all this stuff, I kind of figured it out as I went. So just keep your mind open to new opportunities, I'd say. Beck, very good advice. Hey, thank you so much for some time back on our senior spotlight. Have a great rest of your senior year. That's Beck Anderson joining us, senior from Ogden on KWBG.
