KWBG Senior Spotlight: Ilya Fine, Madrid Senior

KWBG 10/23/26

Transcript

with us on her senior spotlight on KWB. G going to talk to a madrid senior. Ila fine today. We're going to talk some sports and school and she told me she's a little nervous. So I got to ask her stuff that only she knows. If I ask her any tough questions, she may hang up. So Ila first off, I know season came to an end on Monday for volleyball. Congratulations on a great career. You guys played super well on Monday. Yeah, thank you. I'm really proud of us. I think we like we fought as hard as we could together as a team and we didn't give up even though like we were struggling a little bit here and there, but we just kept pushing and I'm really proud of all of us. Well, I tell you what, either that second set, and I know I just talked to Hannah about this on Wednesday for coaches corner. That was a ton of fun. That was some of the madrid volleyball that I remember you guys playing during the season. It was one of those situations where, okay, they have set point and if South Central Calhoun wins, you know, two sets to zero, that's pretty tough. You guys come up with a big win though and I thought that was just tremendous. Played some of your best volleyball. I thought that second set. Yeah, it was really fun. It just like is a reminder of why we play. It's just, it's really fun when we can all like experience that moment together and it just like gives us a lot of momentum to go into the next set with. All right. So you got to tell me about volleyball. I always like knowing about sports and when kids first got in it. Can you remember back when did you start first playing volleyball? Oh gosh, I started playing volleyball in like fourth grade at my old school. So it's been a long time. Oh, wow. But yeah, once I moved here, it just like, it got a lot more important to me. I'd say like my freshman club year is when it really like, I realized like this is what I want to do for as long as I can. So when you go from eighth grade to freshman, had you already been playing club beforehand? Um, no freshman year was my first year of club and it's like what really like changed my perspective on volleyball. Did. Okay. Now you got to remind me because I know club seasons can be a little different when it comes to volleyball. Is that club season back in your freshman year? Was that after high school had gotten done or is that before? It was after my high school season. Okay. So you finished up freshman year and you're like, okay, this volleyball thing was kind of fun. And then do you get approached about playing on a club or you just decide you wanted to? No, I just decided I wanted to and I wanted to try to like play at like a higher level. So I went to Boone's Inferno club team and I just like tried out and I made it. So it was really fun. Yeah. And you told me actually coach told me this and you and I just kind of visited all fair about this, but you're going to play club with Jaila coming up this winter. It sounds like, huh? Yeah, I'm really excited for that because like it's my first time having one of my high school like teammates on a club team with me. And I think it'll make us like so much stronger because like we already have that connection together. And this is my second year with Ohana. So I already have a connection to most of the players there. So I just think it'll be really like fun. Well, I love had a chance to watch you obviously for four years at Madrid. I got a question that I've always wondered because you are a heck of a hitter, but your passing is pretty darn good too. So I got to ask what's better that big spike for a kill or setting somebody up for a big spike in a kill? I think it really depends because you know, I obviously play two different positions. I'm a hitter, but then like I'm also a libero for clubs. So it's like, I think it depends when I'm a libero. I obviously love like getting that assist and like getting like here on my teammate for getting that kill. It's like really special. But like when you're the one that gets the kill, it's also a lot of like momentum for you. It's a lot of like, it's a confidence thing. Like reminds you like you can do it and like you are like there for your team. It just feels like really powerful. So I would say it depends on what position you're playing, but getting a kill is a lot of like hours. Iowa, you can go ahead and say it. I thought you were going to immediately tell me kill. Now, listen, there's nothing better than setting up a teammate. But let's be honest, there's nothing better than smoking one right in front of somebody who's trying to dig it out, right? Yeah, that feels pretty good too. I know it does. Alright, I won't let you make you talk about volleyball the whole time. Let's talk about school a little bit. First couple of months that mattered. How's that class has been going for you? How's school going so far? I think it's going good. I think I'm handling it a lot better than I thought I would. I think the whole senior year thing kind of like scared me at first and I thought it would be like a lot of work. But I'm managing it well, I would say. Are you pretty full on what I mean? How many classes you're taking right now? Yeah, I would say this is like one of my fuller years for classes actually, which is like not something I kind of expected. It's not that bad. How many do you think or how many are you taking this first semester? I think I only have like two periods off. So I'm have like at least five a day. And also like having DMACC with some of those off periods obviously is more challenging. But it's not that bad. I was going to ask you, Ila, with taking DMACC courses and taking obviously courses that mattered as well. Is there one that you prefer? Do you like kind of the college life right now even though you're still in high school? I would say it kind of scares me, but I just I like high school because like I feel connected to everyone and it's like comfortable. So I would say I like high school better. I got you. All right, so when you're away from the volleyball court and you're away from school, what do you like to go do, Ila? Tell me some stuff you like to do in kind of your free time. I'm really like in, I like to outdoors a lot. So I will like go on walks with friends or just like try to go outside as much as I can. My mom lives in the country and we've got a lot of animals. So like just spending time with them or like my siblings outside. And then I also really like music. I play piano, I play guitar, I like to sing, but it's just like for fun. So like when you're all in the car going somewhere with your friends, are you the one belting out the tune flipping the radio? Yeah, definitely. When did you start playing piano? I kind of just have been it as long as I can remember just like it was like my dad taught me how to play and I've just been like learning more on my own for fun. No, so not really lessons per say but kind of self taught? Yeah. Wow. So that's pretty impressive, Ila. I don't know many people that are able to just kind of learn as they go. Is there a particular kind of music you like to play on the piano? Not really. I just like play anything and everything. Every now and then my dad will come up and try to like teach me a new song he's learning. So just like anything really. Is he got a pretty big musical background then? Is that kind of what has him being able to teach you that? I would say he's a lot like me. I think he was more just self taught and kind of did it as a hobby and thought like he would like show me. Alright, you told me that mom's got a bunch of animals. So what kind of animals are we talking about and what's your favorite to hang around? Oh gosh, we've got pigs and chickens and dogs and we did have a bunny. I say my favorite are probably my dogs because they're like I hang out with them the most. I love like taking them on walks or anything. But yeah, I love all animals. So that's cool. That's cool. Now is that going to maybe be in your future either when you get done with Matter? Have we thought about what we want to do when graduation comes? I'm still like deciding but I think I'm going to go into like athletic training possibly and probably keep playing volleyball. I just still deciding on a college but yeah. Now do you I know I asked Chase Perkins this so I'll ask you the same question. Do you want to be closest to home or if you're far away from home is that okay? I think both could be good. I think I want to be enough far away to like experience like life outside of like this community. So like two hours would be like good but I've also looked at some colleges in like Wisconsin where I have other family. Oh wow. I think would also just be fun to get like super far. Oh that would be neat. That would be neat. Ila, I told you I was going to ask you one more question. So here we go. We've come to the end but I want to know advice and it's always interesting to hear what you guys think. So if a freshman came to you Island said I want to have a great four years at Madrid, what do you think you would tell them to do? I think I would tell them to start strong early like in all aspects of life like sports, academics, friends like just like give it everything you have because I know a lot of people they start high school and they don't really try because they just don't care and they're like oh I have four years left but like it goes by a lot faster than you think and I think when you have that like head start it's a lot easier to not fall behind or not feel like you're rushing and then you can look back and be like yeah I gave it everything I got and I don't like regret anything so I would just say like start strong. Start strong. Ila, great advice. Thank you so much for some time on your senior year. It's been a ton of fun to watch you on the volleyball court. Have a great rest of the day. Thanks you too. You bet. Ila Feinigan joining us. Madrid's senior on her senior spotlight.
