Lauren Miller

KWBG 08/30/23

BOONE, Iowa—Lauren Miller, a cherished husband, devoted father, doting grandfather, and loving great-grandfather, passed away on August 28, 2023, at the age of 76, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, due to a heart attack. Lauren’s journey began in Boone, Iowa, where he was born on February 5, 1947 to William and Ruth (Dailey) Miller, and where his legacy will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Lauren’s life was one of dedication and service. After graduating from Boone High School in 1966, he felt the call to serve his country and joined the US Navy, bravely committing five years of his life from 1966 to 1971. On July 13, 1967, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Banford, embarking on a journey of love and partnership that would last for 56 beautiful years. Together, they raised two wonderful daughters and built a family that would become his greatest source of pride and joy.

Lauren’s professional journey led him to a 40-year career with the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, later Union Pacific Railroad, where he served as a conductor. His dedication to his work was matched only by his love for his family. In 2008, Lauren embraced a well-deserved retirement, allowing him more time to spend with those he held most dear.

Family was the cornerstone of Lauren’s life, and his love for them was immeasurable. He treasured every moment spent with his wife, Barbara, daughters Lori (Jeff) Iben and Lisa (Stuart) O’Brien, as well as his grandchildren: Rachel (Ross) Koppenhaver, Taylor Millis, Delaney O’Brien, Ryan Hall, Logan Hall, and Devin O’Brien. His adoration extended to his great-granddaughter, Parker Koppenhaver, who brought him immense joy.

Lauren’s passions were as diverse as his sense of humor was infectious. He was a huge Iowa State Cyclone fan and found solace in the outdoors, whether fishing in the tranquility of nature or engaging in his beloved woodworking projects. Jigsaw puzzles were a shared pastime, bringing the family together where they helped him place the pieces, checking on the status of his current puzzle and seeing what new one he was working on. His quick wit and well-timed jokes were a testament to his vibrant spirit and his ability to bring joy to the lives of those around him.

In addition to his immediate family, Lauren is survived by his sister, Joyce (Larry) Kirk, and three brothers, Paul Miller, Jack (Fran) Miller, and Bernard (Sharon) Miller, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who all held a special place in his heart.

Lauren Miller’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his family. He will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him. As we remember the moments shared, the laughter echoed, and the love freely given, let us find solace in the knowledge that his spirit will forever live on in our hearts.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, September 1, 2023, at Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel, 1006 6th Street, Boone.  Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Following the service, Military Honors, will be performed at the Veterans Monument in Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone.  Online condolences may be left to Lauren’s family at www.schroedermemorialchapel.com.
