Madrid baseball beats Woodward-Granger in extra innings

The Madrid baseball team outlasted Woodward-Granger in a back-and-forth West Central Activities Conference battle Monday, June 15, scoring in the ninth inning to secure a 6–5 victory in extra innings in Granger.

The Madrid baseball team outlasted Woodward-Granger in a back-and-forth West Central Activities Conference battle Monday, June 15, scoring in the ninth inning to secure a 6–5 victory in extra innings in Granger. 

Madrid wasted no time getting on the board, pushing across a run in the top of the first inning. 

Woodward-Granger responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to take its first lead of the game, but Madrid fought back in the fifth.  

The Tigers scored two runs in the top half of the inning, only to see Woodward-Granger answer again with a three-run outburst in the bottom half to go back in front 5–3. 

The Tigers tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings, then completed the comeback with a go-ahead run in the ninth to secure the 6–5 win. 

Kole Deppe led Madrid at the plate with two hits, three runs scored and two RBIs. 

McCoy Cooley also finished with two hits and three RBIs. 

Eli Petersen had 1 hit and 1 run scored. 

Landon Lenehan and Mason Morman each scored 1 run. 

Emerson Bridgewater and Kolbie Owens each had 1 hit. 

Owens earned the win for Madrid, delivering a solid start and finishing with four strikeouts. 

Levi Kockler provided a strong effort out of the bullpen, striking out five batters in relief. 

With the win, Madrid improves to 6–7 overall and 4–5 in conference play.  

Woodward-Granger falls to 6–6 overall and 5–5 in the conference. 

Madrid hosts West Central Valley in a conference doubleheader tonight, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
