
The Madrid softball team had just enough offense in the middle innings and held on late to secure a 5-4 win over Woodward-Granger in West Central Activities Conference play Monday, June 15, in Woodward.
Madrid pushed across a run in the top of the first inning.
However, Woodward-Granger answered with two runs in the bottom half to take an early 2-1 advantage.
The Tigers settled in and evened the contest in the third inning with a single run before scoring three runs in the inning to take a 5-2 lead.
Woodward-Granger battled back, scoring once in the fourth inning and again in the fifth to cut the deficit to one.
Mayzie Surratt clubbed two home runs, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
She also tossed a complete game, striking out six batters to earn the win.
Samantha Springer went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
Hailey Renslow added two hits for the Tigers, while Audrey Brown, Ashlyn Burkhart, and Kiera Alt each contributed a hit.
Tilly Sweet drove in a run for Madrid, while Lucy Schaeller scored twice and Giana Tjernagel added a run to round out the Tigers’ scoring effort.
With the win, Madrid improves to 13-4 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
Woodward-Granger falls to 7-8 overall and 5-4 in league play.
Madrid will host West Central Valley in a conference doubleheader tonight with first pitch set for 5:30 p.m.
