Madrid boys’ track wins two distance events

The Madrid boys’ track and field team won two distance events, finishing fourth overall with 70 team points, Monday, April 13, at the Southeast Valley Boys Invitational in Gowrie.

The Madrid boys’ track and field team won two distance events, finishing fourth overall with 70 team points, Monday, April 13, at the Southeast Valley Boys Invitational in Gowrie. 

Distance events  

Hudson White claimed an event title in the 3200-meter run, winning the race with a time of 11:17.12.  

Madrid also captured a meet championship in relay competition, as the 4×800-meter relay of Caleb Berberich, Henry Hudnall, Kris Petersen and Cavin Pehl took first place with a time of 9:03.57. 

Berberich placed third in the 800 meters, running 2:15.92, while teammate Hudnall followed close behind in fifth at 2:18.10. 

Pehl also placed fifth in the 1600-meter run in a time of 5:00.69. 

The distance medley relay of Drake Wandersheid, Dylan Fox, Landon Lenehan and Aiden Firmstone placed sixth in 4:32.18. 

Hurdle events 

Jake Sawyer earned a runner‑up finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.98 seconds.  

Madrid placed third as a team in the shuttle hurdle relay (Loken Velkey, Sawyer, Chase Perkins and Brady Springer), crossing the line in 1:09.90. 

Sprint events 

In sprint relays, the Tigers’ 4×200-meter relay of Sander Nelson, Kinnick Grimm, Kole Deppe and Tyler Sonnenfelt finished second overall in 1:37.09, while the sprint medley relay (Velky, Sawyer, Sonnenfelt and Grimm), placed third in 1:39.55. 

Madrid also competed in the 4×100-meter relay (Nelson, Vekly, Mason Morman and Sonnenfelt), which placed fifth with a time of 44.58. 

Nelson placed 5th in the 100-meter dash in 12.20, and Jacob Farrell placed 6th in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.00. 

Field events 

Brady Springer placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 5¼ inches, and Kole Deppe tied for sixth in the high jump with a jump of 5-04. 

In the throwing events, Evenou Viglo placed sixth in both the shot put (37‑08) and the discus (114‑03).

The boys are scheduled to compete Thursday, April 16, at the Saydel Boys Track Invitational in Des Moines.
