
The Madrid softball team went 1-4 over stretch of games late last week, highlighted by a high-scoring comeback win at the Belmond-Klemme Invitational.
Saturday, June 20 (Belmond-Klemme Invitational)
Game 1: Madrid 10, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura 9
Madrid scored 7 runs in the 2nd inning, then added 3 more in the fourth inning to secure a wild comeback victory.
Mayzie Surratt hit a 2-run home run and scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs while Samantha Springer had 3 hits, 1 run, 2 RBIs and 2 steals
Katelyn Mickle had 2 RBIs, and Hailey Renslow added 1 hit, 1 run and 1 RBI.
Savannah Bradley connected for 1 hit and scored 2 runs.
Surratt earned the complete game victory with 6 strikeouts.
Game 2: Belmond-Klemme 4, Madrid 1
The host team beat Madrid in the second game.
Springer led the way with 1 hit, 1 RBI, a double and a stolen base.
Ashlyn Burkhart, Kiera Alt, and Renslow all had 1 hit each, and Mayzie Surratt scored the team’s lone run.
Surratt struck out 7 but took the complete game loss.
Thursday, June 18
Perry 6, Madrid 2 (non-conference game at Madrid)
Surratt led the Tigers with 2 hits, including a double, and scored a run.
Hits were also recorded by Alt, Tilly Sweet, Rylee Borcherding, Bradley, Renslow and Hadley Mickle.
Samantha Springer added an RBI and a stolen base, and Lucy Schaller scored a run.
Surratt took the loss, striking out three.
Friday, June 19
West Central Activities Conference doubleheader at Van Meter
Game 1: No. 5 Van Meter 16, Madrid 0
Madrid managed just two hits from Burkhart and Sweet.
Starting pitcher Surratt and took the loss and had 1 strikeout.
Mickle added 2 strikeouts in relief.
Game 2: Van Meter 12, Madrid 5
Surratt had 2 hits, including a home run, 2 runs, and 1 RBI.
Sweet added 2 hits and 2 RBIs while Ashlyn Burkhart had 2 hits and 2 runs scored.
Springer contributed 1 hit, 1 run and 1 RBI, Bradley had 1 hit, and Borcherding ended with 1 RBI.
Mickle pitched a complete game with 2 strikeouts in the loss.
The Tigers now sit at 15-9 overall and 7-6 in conference play.
Madrid hosts Panorama (7-14, 4-11 conference) tonight in conference action at Madrid High School.
