Sandy Sawyer

Sandy Sawyer, 72, Boone, Iowa

BOONE, Iowa—Sandy Ann Sawyer, age 72, of Boone, passed away Monday, September 14, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Sandy was born July 20, 1954, in Fort Dodge, the daughter of Richard Dale and Kay Ann (Cayou) Sawyer. She graduated from Twin Rivers High School in Bode, IA with the class of 1972, where she was the class president.

Sandy then joined the US Army in the fall of 1972 and was honorably discharged in 1975. After her time in the service, she moved back to Iowa and attended Buena Vista College and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.

Sandy started teaching at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Boone and remained there until a few years ago. While teaching, Sandy received the Good Shepherd Award, which goes to a school employee who is admired, respected, and held in high regards from their peers.

Sandy constantly was giving to others with her volunteering and donations; she volunteered at two food banks in Boone. Her faith was very important to her and she was involved with numerous committees at Sacred Heart Church. Sandy was an avid sports fan, specifically following the Cubs and Cyclones.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Kay Sawyer; infant brother, Jay Michael Sawyer; and brother, Jared Sawyer.

Sandy is survived by her sister, Sue (Craig) Slattum of Joice, IA; two brothers, Jeff Sawyer of St. Paul, MN and Jay Joseph (Carri) Sawyer of Bettendorf, IA; nieces and nephews, Katie (Luke) Thielen, Jason (Alyssa) Slattum, Abbey (Troy) Hess, Jordan (Kassandra) Sawyer and Troy (Ashlyn) Sawyer; great-nieces and great-nephews, Haley, Hannah, Ben, Lauren, Cora, Anna, Oliver, Milo and Rio.

Visitation will be held Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at the Church of the Sacred Heart, 915 12th Street, Boone, with a Rosary recited at 10:00 AM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM Saturday, at the Church of the Sacred Heart, with Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Following the Mass, cremation will take place, and inurnment will be held at a later date in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Livermore, IA.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to either Sacred Heart School or Sacred Heart Church in memory of Sandy.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone. Online condolences may be left for Sandy’s family at www.schroedermemorialchapel.com.
