Three Boone girls qualify for state track and field meet

Jennifer LaMar, Maleah Shivers and Briella Johnson punched their tickets to the state track meet as the Boone girls track and field team finished fifth Thursday, May 14, at the Class 3A state qualifying meet at North Polk in Alleman.

Jennifer LaMar, Maleah Shivers and Briella Johnson punched their tickets to the state track meet as the Boone girls track and field team finished fifth Thursday, May 14, at the Class 3A state qualifying meet at North Polk in Alleman. 

The Toreadors finished fifth overall with 84 team points, and North Polk captured the team title with 167 points. 

Leading the way for the Toreadors was LaMar, who captured a state‑qualifying victory in the shot put with a throw of 43‑05.25, which set a new school record.  

The previous record was set by Shivers in April who had broken LaMar’s previous school record from earlier in April. 

Shivers finished second in the shot put (40‑11.50) to also secure a trip to state. 

On the track, Briella Johnson earned another automatic berth by finishing second in the 400-meter run, clocking a time of 1:01.43. 

Taylor Arringdale placed third in the long jump (15‑09.75). 

The 4×800 relay team of Reagan Morgan, Whitney Chesnut, Quinn Houson and Johnson earned a third-place finish in 10:29.71. 

The shuttle hurdle relay of Abi Leu, McKenzie Klatt, Hadley Gustafson and Kyra Darby earned third place in 1:12.68. 

LaMar finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 103-07, and Morgan placed fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:32.19. 

Avah Hayes finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:13.04, and Whitney Chesnut placed fifth in the 1500-meter run (5:05.71). 

The distance medley relay of Halle Bailey, Arringdale, Mady Davison and Reagan Morgan finished fifth in 4:36.23. 

The 4×200-meter relay of Klatt, Tala Wittrock, Davidson and Bry Morgan placed fifth in 1:58.67. 

The 4×100-meter relay of Leu, Wittrock, Arringdale and Bailey finished fifth in 51.48. 

The 4×400-meter relay of Klatt, Darby, Davidson and Johnson placed fifth in 4:22.87. 

The sprint medley relay of Bailey, Arringdale, Hayes and Bry Morgan finished sixth in 2:05.13. 

Darby finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles in 1:12.68, and Leu finished eighth in the 100-meter dash in 13.96.

The state track and field meet is scheduled for Thursday to Saturday, May 21-23, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
