BOONE, Iowa—Funeral arrangements have been set for Loren D. Appenzeller, 88, of Boone, Iowa. He passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at Bethany Life in Story City.
Loren was born April 1, 1933, in Corydon, Iowa, to Elmer and Hazel (Gordon) Appenzeller. His family moved to Stratford, Iowa, where he grew up on the family farm and graduated high school. He served in the United States Marine Corps—active duty on 38th Parallel in Western Korea and then Japan. Loren obtained a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from University of Northern Iowa with additional teaching certificates for Vocational Machine Shop and Adult Welding night classes.
He retired after a 24-year teaching career within the Iowa school districts of Lakota, Garner and Boone. In addition to teaching, Loren was employed by Fareway Stores, Inc . as a part-time semi driver for 18 years.
Loren was a life member of the United States Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. He was also a member of the Central Christian Church. Loren served on the board of the Boone County Community Credit Union, and was involved with Toastmasters, Boone Little League Baseball (coach) and Boy Scouts of America (assistant scout master).
Loren was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Meredith; and son, Larry. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Joyce; sons, Mark (Barb) and Brad (Trudy); daughters, Deb (Max) and Diane; daughter-in-law, Annie; 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Central Christian Church in Boone. Visitation will be held from 9:30 A.M. until time of service. Burial will be at a later date in Bass Point Cemetery, north of Boone.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for local college scholarship funds or directly to Central Christian Church.
