Heggen, Silbaugh and Malone qualify for state

Cadence Heggen placed 1st and Poppy Malone and McKayla Silbaugh placed 2nd at the Class 2A regional girls’ wrestling meet Friday, January 31, in Ames, which qualified them for state. 

The girls’ state wrestling tournament will take place on Thursday and Friday, February 6 and 7, at XSTREAM Arena in Coralville. 

Heggen received a bye in the quarterfinals before pinning Gracen Plagge of Denison-Schleswig in :26 in the semifinals. 

In the championship match at 190 pounds, she pinned Zsuzsana Bourassa of Sioux City East in 1:56. 

Silbaugh pinned Yvana Diaz of Sioux City North in :46 in the quarterfinals before getting pinned by Kyiah Logan of Spencer in 1:26. 

In the consolation semifinals, she won by medical forfeit over Dakota Hastings of Nevada before pinning Nyamal Koang of Sioux City West in 1:19 in the 3rd-place match. 

In the 2nd-place match at 130 pounds, Silbaugh pinned Lily Anderson of Ames in 2:39 to receive 2nd place. 

Malone received a bye in the quarterfinals before pinning Allison Houston of Nevada in 5:10 in the semifinals. 

In the 1st-place match at 105 pounds, Malone was pinned by Madison Stickrod of Spencer in 1:13 before winning by no contest over Houston to secure 2nd place. 

Gracie Vodenik placed 3rd. 

In the quarterfinals, she pinned Anaya Johnson Thomas of Sioux City North in 3:43 before getting pinned by Lexa Rozevink in :48 in the semifinals. 

In the consolation semifinals, Vodenik won by major decision over Lilliana Sanchez of Spencer , 13-2, before winning by technical fall over Tatyana Roy of Sioux City West, 18-3, in the 3rd-place match. 

In the 2nd-place match at 135 pounds, she was pinned by Cadence Bushong of Nevada in :26. 

Emersyn Zehner placed 3rd

In the quarterfinals, she pinned Adalynn Muhlbauer in 1:37 before getting pinned by Shaylee Sutherland of Spencer in 1:05 in the semifinals. 

In the consolation semifinals, Zehner pinned Taylor Walker of Denison-Schleswig in 1:12 before getting pinned by Danyka Peterson of Sioux City North in 4:47 in the 3rd-place match. 

In the 2nd-place match at 140 pounds, was pinned by Lauryn Metcalf of Ames in :51. 

Natalie Thompson placed 4th

In the quarterfinals, she pinned Mia Reichart of Nevada in 3:33 before getting pinned by Jenna Hansen of Sioux City North in 2:35. 

In the consolation semifinals at 145 pounds, Thompson pinned Jolyssa Rodes Perez of Sioux City West in 1:24 before getting pinned by Giana Garcia of Denison Schleswig in 2:36 in the 3rd-place match. 

Other Toreadors participating at regionals were Johanna Meeks at 115 pounds, Averie Strollo at 120 pounds, Kira Majak at 155 pounds and Claire Thompson at 170 pounds.
