Madrid drops doubleheader at Van Meter

The Madrid baseball team ran into a tough West Central Activities Conference opponent Friday, June 19, falling to Van Meter in both games of a doubleheader at Van Meter School.

The Madrid baseball team ran into a tough West Central Activities Conference opponent Friday, June 19, falling to Van Meter in both games of a doubleheader at Van Meter School. 

Game 1: Van Meter 12, Madrid 1 

Van Meter took control early in the opener and never looked back, defeating Madrid 12-1. 

The Tigers recorded just a pair of hits. 

 Emerson Bridgewater and McCoy Cooley each collected one hit, while Kole Deppe accounted for Madrid’s lone run. 

Conner Pettiecord got the start and was charged with the loss, finishing with three strikeouts.  

Eli Nelson provided relief and also had three strikeouts in his outing. 

Game 2: Van Meter 17, Madrid 2 

Van Meter completed the sweep in the nightcap, pulling away for a 17-2 victory. 

Cayden Loerzel led the Tigers with two hits and an RBI.  

Bridgewater added a double, scoring one run and driving in another.  

Kolbie Owens contributed a hit, and Landon Lenehan scored one of Madrid’s two runs. 

Zach Newell started and took the loss, while Brady Springer came on in relief and recorded one strikeout. 

With the losses, Madrid falls to 8-10 overall and 6-7 in conference play.  

Van Meter improves to 14-7 overall and 11-3 in the conference. 

The Tigers will look to bounce back quickly as they return home to face Panorama (2-15 overall, 2-13 conference) later tonight at Madrid High School.
