Joining us now on our halftime report on KWBGR, senior spotlight tonight and we're going to get a chance to talk to Boone senior Jonathan Van Rookle as well football season obviously going on right now but I want to know about Jonathan what it was like your summer before senior year so tell me what you do this past summer. This summer was a lot of football. I went to a lot of different camps, college camps over the summer so I went to seven of those and then had a lot of offseason lifting just with the football team and getting offseason reps and as well at open fields and then in early July I went on a trip to Spain with my family so that was also pretty fun. Wow okay hold up we'll get back to football here in a little bit. Tell me about Spain though what was that like? So my older sister is studying to be a Spanish teacher so she's studying abroad there so we just went for the last week of her trip and she showed us around we flew into Valencia and yeah it was a pretty fun time. We were in Valencia for around four days and then took trains to Cordoba and Granada just to sightsee and it was pretty cool. Alright so I've heard about the architecture, I've heard about the food, which one's better? The sights or the food? You gotta get the right stuff if you're talking food. There was a lot of some of the paella that's a staple. It wasn't my favorite. My parents liked it but yeah that's what they're known for it wasn't my favorite but there's a couple other things. There's a couple other things. They eat really late there. They eat around 10pm is when they eat dinner. So yeah it was a bit of a different, it was a bit of a switch up getting used to that but food wasn't bad. There were some pretty good things and other stuff that I thought was a little overrated but still not bad. But architecture wise we saw a couple palaces and some old churches and things like that and they were definitely a sight to see and especially even just the city just going around it. It was very nice. So Jonathan they eat like lunch at like noon? I mean is that normal and then they wait another like 10 hours till we eat like dinner? Yeah they'll usually eat around 12 or 1. They'll eat a snack but they have very late dinner. Normally they'll take a nap around 2-3 o'clock is when it'd be normally restaurants and stuff would be closed down and then late dinners. Our last night there was the night Spain played I believe it was Portugal and the World Cup. Oh the World Cup? How intense was that over there then? Yeah it was a lot. There's posters everywhere. There's the La Mignon Mall jerseys. You could buy them about every single shop. So they were big into that for sure. I was going to say because I know soccer how big it is over there. I mean their World Cup is basically like our Super Bowl so that had to be pretty fun to be around that though. Yeah it was. That last night I think they won in extra time or something on a goal and we were outside eating dinner and you can just hear all the cheers from a block down. So yeah it was a pretty fun environment. Oh that's neat. So obviously you had some football this summer. We had the Spain trip as well. School year I know we're only a weekend but tell me about it so far. Jonathan pretty happy with the classes and what you've taken here for a semester? Yeah for sure. I'm getting into some DMACC classes. Some more English and statistics so some stuff that challenged me a little more than I might be used to and then I'm getting into this. It's my third step in a coaching class so I'm working towards getting my coaching authorization through DMACC which is something I care about a lot. So future plans then. We're taking some pretty difficult courses and it's your name and offer. We're not just taking hey I'm a senior 101 so I'm impressed with that but two what's the future look like? Is coaching going to be a big part Jonathan for the future? I believe so. It would definitely be my goal would be a collegiate football coach. That's something I think that I understand the game. I believe pretty well and I'm looking at playing college football and I mean the best way to become a coach is obviously being a player going through graduate assistant after that and getting in that way and that's basically part of my plan so far. Are you thinking like position coach Jonathan or do you want that big whistle the head coach? You know at this point I'm not too sure on that. I don't know if I have that full knowledge to be a head coach yet obviously but I think defensively I think the highest maybe a defensive coordinator or something like that because that's the side of the ball I understand the most and I think I could excel the most at. Well I hear they put in some long nights Jonathan you okay with that? Yeah I mean I love football so doing it as a job would be one work right? Oh boy. If you enjoy your job you're not working a day of your life. Nope that's the head listen Jonathan that you want to talk about the best saying if that comes true someday for you and I see you on the street you can say hey remember that conversation we had it's true. I mean seriously it's the truth when you love what you do you don't feel like you're ever working so that's awesome buddy. Alright so tell me about some things you're looking forward to. Obviously first football game is going on right now as we play this interview but give me some other things Jonathan senior year. Into the dances are you into homecoming last day of school you can throw that out there too if you want but what are some things you're looking forward to this year? I'm looking forward to weight room wise I think especially once football is over I think being able to improve myself in that realm just because I won't be as busy in the winter time. So getting in there as well as learning more about the weight room type of thing with I mean that plays into football a lot and the coaching aspect of that. So the strengthening of this thing is also something I'm interested in and obviously all the dances are fun definitely into that and I don't know that's about it. I got you I got you. So piece of advice Jonathan everybody always says how do you get through four years it goes really quick but you guys got to have something that you've thought about. So give a freshman a piece of advice Jonathan if somebody came up to you and said hey I want to have a great four years at Taboon High School. What do you tell them how do they have that great four years. I think if you're unsure about going for things maybe trying a new sport trying a new activity just do it. Don't be scared to try new things that you're unsure about and it just makes it so much more fun. I mean I played four sports freshman year I enjoyed all of them and I've been involved in the orchestra and other things like that. And just varying the things you're involved in and trying new things really makes high school a lot more fun being involved in a lot of different stuff that you can learn to grow in and enjoy.
