The Boone girls’ swimming team beat Grinnell and Williamsburg Tuesday, September 29, competing at the Grinnell College Natatorium.
The Toreadors won several individual events and two relays during the meet.
“Tonight was a great show of our team depth,” head coach Chris Mann said.
“Our JV swimmers really stepped up and used tonight as a chance to drop a bunch of time across all events,” Mann said.
Boone opened the individual events by sweeping the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle.
Quinn Houston won the event in 2:05.55, Ellie Hughes was second in 2:11.48, and Harper Houston finished third in 2:16.70.
Aleah Karolus and Avery Howie followed with a one-two finish in the 50-yard freestyle.
Karolus won in 25.23 seconds, while Howie was second in 25.91.
Karolus later added another victory in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing in 1:02.99.
Howie also picked up a win in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.62 seconds, while Kilee Hughes took third in 59.73.
Morgan Cox gave Boone another individual victory in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:58.18.
Ashlyn Burkhart placed third in the event with a time of 6:30.79, and Bailey Bruck finished in 8:44.56.
“I am so proud of Bailey Bruck,” Mann said.
“Bailey has been a swimmer on our team for 4 years and finally had a chance to swim our longest event – the 500,” Mann said.
“We set a goal for her to break 10:00 and she crushed it – 8:44!” he said.
“Also a shout out to Morgan Cox for winning the 500, with a negative split to take the win,” Mann said.
The Toreadors swept the top two spots in the 100-yard backstroke.
Claire Enabnit won in 1:08.26, with Finley Houser taking second in 1:11.33.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Harper Houston finished third in 1:17.68.
Boone also had a strong showing in the 200-yard individual medley, as Sara Gute placed second in 2:43.72, Anthea Law was third in 2:45.91, and Lily Wright finished fourth in 2:50.90.
The Toreadors won both freestyle relays.
Howie, Quinn Houston, Kilee Hughes and Karolus combined to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:44.00.
Boone’s team of Karolus, Houser, Ellie Hughes and Howie captured the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:55.30.
Boone also finished second and third in the opening 200-yard medley relay.
Kilee Hughes, Harper Houston, Houser and Quinn Houston took second in 2:05.09, while Cox, Law, Cali Hernandez and Claire Enabnit placed third in 2:10.75.
In diving, Boone’s Amaya Filipiak finished third with 167.50 points, while Chloey Williams placed fifth with 135.10 points.
“We had a lot of great swims tonight that deserve recognition – but there are too many to list,” Mann said.
The Toreadors have an overall record of 22-2 and a dual record of 4-0.
The next meet is Tuesday, October 6, at Carroll.
