With us on coach's corner here on KWBG, get a chance to talk some Madrid girls track. They had their invitation last night. Kelly growth was right there. When were you sitting at home relaxing is the question after what sounded like a pretty speedy meet last night, coach? It was, it was run very quickly between storms and just being a pretty small girls only meet. We were out of school, I think by 730. So we wanted to make sure to get everyone on the road back towards their homes with storm chances coming and we're really thankful to have a meet after losing both of ours last week due to due to weather. Well, I really like this meet. One, because I think it's cool that all three of my Boone County teams get a chance to compete. But two, I really think not just the Boone County schools, you bring some great schools in there, Kelly. And when I, you know, name you three, with obviously you guys Ogden and Boone, but boy, I really love the competition you have there. And not just in like one, like, okay, well this team's kind of known for sprints or this team's known for distance. I feel like that invitation was very well rounded. It is, there's some good competition. We bring in, I mean, some three A and two A schools and I'm always happy to see our Metro Tigers hold their own against schools that have two to three or four times as many students to pull from for their team as we do. We're not as deep, we're not maybe, you know, double scoring and all the open events, but we went out and won several events and we're really pleased with our girls' efforts. Nice to see Paige Richards back on the track, I bet, coach. Yeah, I mean, we had meets that got canceled, so I don't think it was super noticeable, but we had a couple girls sitting out with some minor injuries and we're able to bring three of the four back last night. So Paige won the long jump 100 and 200 and definitely a good start to getting back where she would like to be and where we know that she can be. I was just gonna ask, it's just to start, it's April 15th, we don't hit this, oh my gosh, we gotta hurry up button, but what'd you think about Paige in doing, boy, three events that she's really known for? Yeah, she came out and just long jumped once. It was good enough for first and didn't need to jump again. So we thought that was enough for the first time out and she is someone who thrives on competition and runs best when she's challenged, but it really didn't happen in the one and the two, so hopefully when she has a meet with some people who are right on her tail pushing her, then that will help her to get even faster as well. But it's just a start back, you know, you've gotta get your confidence under you and know that you can complete a race after you've been injured and we got that out of her and a couple other runners last night too. Well, Lauren Dvorak is somebody else I wanna talk about because it feels like she really thrives with competition and she ends up finishing second in the shot put last night and wins the discus. She just did something a couple of days ago that you don't see very often, Kelly. Can you talk about how she went down to East Union on Monday? Yeah, so it's not uncommon in track and field. You know, we have meets canceled and then spots open up on our schedule and we keep a couple meets open on our schedule for different purposes too, but if you've got an athlete who's close to qualifying for Drake, just send them to an extra meet and just do one event and just really try to focus in on getting good competition or getting the opportunity to do that event really well. So Lauren went to East Union on Monday and threw the shot in the disc and she is someone who puts in so much work in the off season. She's been working on these events all year. She attends clinics. She's had all the practice she needs. She just needed some opportunities to throw and the discus especially can be very fickle with the weather. If there's a wind that's just not quite right, sometimes it just drops everybody's discus 20 feet before it should. So we wanted to get her some opportunities to really be able to throw her best before Drake. So Lauren threw 145 feet, two inches in the discus, which was a personal best, which broke her previous school record and also meets the blue standard for the Drake relays. This is an automatic qualifier for Drake relays and discus and also through over 39 feet in the shot put which is a personal best for her as well. Wow, I mean, those are some throws Kelly. It sounds like she was ready, right? I mean, she had prom this weekend too, coach, but it sounded like that wasn't a big deal for a Monday, huh? Yep, it has been a really busy time for our team and we just praise all of our kids for how involved they are in our community. They've got music and solo ensemble contest. They had prom, they took the ACT. They, some of our kids are in dance and have a big competition to end their season this Friday. So we had one going from the track meet to a dance class back to the hurdles at the track meet and they're multitaskers and they're tired. So we're really thankful for these close to home shorter meets this week, but Lauren is a very serious, dedicated athlete and was able to just go, have one focus in mind and accomplish that goal and we're really, really proud of her. Well, I know we've talked about the sprints and we've talked a little bit about the field events. I'm not gonna forget about my distance girls and I know you won't let me forget that anyway, but boy, your distance runners have done such a nice job, Kelly. It was nice to see you guys go one and two in the 15 last night with Madeline Grothis and Caitlin Brandhorse. And then I'm thinking, okay, what comes up in the 3000? Oh, it's just Hannah Brandhorse getting a championship. Those distance runners, coach, I know I just only named three of them, but boy, collectively, what a nice solid group this spring. It is, and we really just, you know, I've watched other teams have these runners that are posting these amazing times for 20 years and I love that we get to experience that as a team as well and they bring so much. It's nice to have multiple. We can space them out. Sometimes we can load up a four by eight. Other times we can do the open event. So we had three different people be able to do so well in the two mile and the mile. And not just three, we had a GV runner in the mile get fourth overall in Keras Peasley. So Caitlin also anchored the DMED to first place finish in Madeline, anchored the four by eight, which just gives everyone else the opportunity to be on a relay and see what they can do as well. So they're solid runners. Caitlin was coming back after a couple of meets and days off and ran just a solid race, right where she was at the beginning of the season. Madeline ran a PR by I think six seconds, which was thrilling for her. So they've definitely got getting under five minutes in their site. It's different on your home track just against your teammate. You know, it's a different type of mentality, but they did it together and they looked so great racing and helping themselves do well, but also helping each other. So they are a great core of our team. They put in a lot of hard work too. I mentioned Lauren, but these girls run all year as well. And are in the weight room. And it definitely shows they lead us on the track and they lead us off the track through the example that they set up just working really hard. I know you guys don't take this for granted, Kelly, but you just said something about it. It was nice to watch them on our home track, you know, kind of pushing each other. It's nice to be on our home track and to have those meets too, Kelly. Like I said, I know we don't take that for granted, but man, that's just super exciting. I know I'd probably bring it up every year after your invitational, but it's just neat that you have such a beautiful facility and get to showcase it. We do love that. And I know that our volunteers run a fantastic meet. And, you know, after I took a break from coaching for a couple of years and during that time, but that I had coached earlier in my career, we just had a dirt track. So we didn't have a whole meet. If it was raining like it is today, we didn't even have anywhere to practice. So I'm really thankful for our school and community that have put the effort into building such a nice facility, maintaining it, and then maintaining such good track meets that we can host others. And the girls, we made sure they knew they were part of it too and how they compose themselves and treat our guests. And we want to make sure we're modeling respect for our opponents, respect for our teammate, our own team, and appreciation for all the volunteers that came out and made it a great meet. Thursday, I know the girls are going to be over in Ogden, but it sounds like we'll go maybe even a little bit lighter than we even did last night. Coming up on Thursday, Kelly, I know you guys do a good job with not just rest and recovery, but listen, we don't need to be in four events, you know, where we are right now. We're at a good spot. Yeah, it's about developing the athlete, developing our team, figuring out what our best events are going to be and how we can put together relays at the end of the season that are going to score the most points at conference, district, and state. So yeah, we'll run people in a couple of events, but it's right now more about training and building up an athlete than winning the meet. That's fun to do, but not at the expense of the athlete. That's the most important thing right now. Kelly, as always, thank you so much for some time. Thanks for the results as well, and we'll talk to you again here in a couple of weeks. Yep, thank you, Ryan. You bet. Kelly Grothiskin joining us. Madrigal's Track here on Coach's Corner.
