Coaches Corner for April 21st: Randy Johnson, Ogden Golf

KWBG 04/21/26

Transcript

With us on coaches corner here in KWBG going to talk some Ogden golf today with Randy Johnson head coach as the Bulldogs get ready to kind of a busy week, I guess. Not as busy, of course, with the seniors away on senior trip. I know it definitely hits you on the boys' side. Maybe that's where we should start, Coach, because I know Saturday you had an opportunity to play, but then ended up getting postponed. So seniors are only going to miss one meet. That's right. We've got some boys that want to play this year, and they're going to have a full schedule in front of them when they get back, and the 18-holer got moved to a Wednesday. So that should be decent there, and it'll be kind of a good stepping stone for us coming into the last half of the season. Continue to watch the scores to drop over which we are the last two or three meets. It's going to ask you how we're feeling right now on the boys' side of things. I feel like scores are going where I think we thought we're going to go, and that's down. How do you feel like they're playing on the course right now? I think they're playing well. Five out of six of them are gone on the senior trip and enjoying themselves this week. Jace Bemboz out there playing, and him and Harry had to head last night, and Bembo got him on whole nine with a birdie. So they were having a good time with that. Well, we get the clubs back in their hands when they get back. I think they've got two days to practice, and we'll start Tuesday. I think we have a triangular or quad tenor, which is always a good one. So being able to adapt to different courses will be the key, and that's what we're stressing. We don't have any more home stuff until May, which we've got a senior night there. They get back. I think they just push each other, which is good. And if you're a high score coming out of a meet or two of them are, I like to throw them into the playoffs again just to confirm that they've got that spot instead of being complacent and think they've got it regardless what they shoot. So I keep them on their toes that way. Well, they had a real nice meet, I thought, when Van Meter and ACGC came to town, just edged Van Meter, who I know usually shoots pretty low rounds, especially toward the beginning of the season. I thought that was a real nice win for you guys last week. It was. The boys played well. Both teams have a couple really good kids in the top spots there. That's a good challenge for us. We're on the street, or let us a team to beat right now. We play them next week, but not with a full roster. That might be a good thing. It might be a bad thing. But we'll have them geared up for them when we do play in conference. So yeah, that was a good win for us. And as you and I projected, the scores are going to continue to get lower and lower. And it gets contagious, and I like that. Yeah, no question. I think that was something we kind of knew. When we had talked, I think we were one match in or one meet in, and they're going to get better. There's no doubt. And I'm kind of seeing that even on the girls side of things too, Randy. And that's where I kind of wanted to pop next, because it felt like the girls had a real nice opportunity to finally get that meet in against Northpoke. I feel like that thing happened about nine different times. And then finally got a chance to play that back on April the 14th. And boy, you got a real nice victory there. Girls shot a 205 that day. 205 at TCI. I said it's a chances that it's the only home meet they have. So to provide us to go down there and play a quality course like that, they need to take advantage of it. I mean, you get down there and play in the summertime. You're going to be paying $75 to $100. So get out there and enjoy it. Get on the practice screens. Enjoy that. That's the only big difference between us and other places. And learn how to get that two put in. That's what we thrive for. Well, and I thought Olivia Coleman had a really nice round for you, Coach. Shot a 49. Mattie Ellis and Lydia Longhorn were right there shooting 51. That's what we want. We want A, everybody bunched up, and B, those to be low scores. And we kind of got it that day. Yep, yep. And we need that four score to come in there, which I think we're going to get. But that's where they need to be and just keep lower and that. And you can kind of put all the stats or the numbers together and kind of watch that trend develop. And that's what I enjoy about me, just walking along and see what areas that we need to improve. And we might take an hour the next day, and that's what we're going to work on over and over and over again. If you're good with a driver, 90% of your practice times got to be with your other clubs. So you've got to get it and play, and then you have to play the rest of the game. What do you expect in tonight with Green County? I know the hill isn't a home course, but it's close enough that I guarantee the girls have been out there quite a few times. What are you expecting here tonight? Yeah, I haven't looked at any scores at Green County yet. It's a good course for the girls. We're missing two seniors again, so that's going to hurt Mandy and Lydia are gone. But that's OK. We're going to meet up with Green County several times this year. They're usually probably evenly matched, and I think they're going to Southeast Webster on Friday, but we'll have the same girls. And we'll just see where it falls. I don't know where they're going to be, but the Greens will be fast there. They'll be kind of domed. You've got to hit short on those and let them pop up on there instead of going for the green, and they'll go over every time. I guarantee. But this adjustment you have to make with a different course. That's all you have to do. Hey, Randy, as always, thank you so much for some time. Thanks for the results as well, and we'll talk to you again here in two weeks. All right, thanks, Ryan. You bet. Randy Johnson and joining us. Ogden Golfe here on Coach's Corner.
