Coaches Corner for May 19th: Randy Johnson, Ogden Golf

KWBG 05/19/26

Transcript

With us on coaches corner at KWB, G going to talk some Ogden golf. It has been a busy, not even two weeks, just kind of 10 days here. Randy Johnson joining us. And Ogden, of course, had sectionals. And then Regionals last Friday had a chance to have districts yesterday with Jace Coleman down in Shenandoah. And we'll get to that here in just a few. Boy, Randy, I tell you what, it feels like this season, a lot of stuff had gone on. I was looking back before we had a chance to talk today. And then all of a sudden, postseason, just boom, it's here. And really, really frantic last 10 days here. Yeah, well, at the beginning of the season, and everything getting postponed and bumped back. And I think the boys were a couple of me just shy this year that we couldn't get in. One conference meet and one tournament. And the senior trip come down. And we usually take a couple of big hits there on the senior trip because everybody's gone. And I'll be darned that the boys didn't miss a meet on senior trip week because everything got postponed or pushed back. So when they came back, both the boys and girls, we were in the heat of the battle from there on out. And I know they were kind of excited when they were on the senior trip of getting back and starting to play again, which it's kind of a good motivator, knowing that they're not going to miss anything. And the boys, you couldn't pick any one boy out that had to carry the team when you have four and five and six guys jumping in there and taking the role. So that's what you need to be a good team. I mean, if somebody has a let down or something, somebody else, another two or three guys need to step up and take charge. And nobody'd be jealous of anybody else shooting a good score. I mean, I like to play it as a team sport. Instead of individuals, the individuals are going to shine anyway. But the team sport of it, I just assume go as a team as an individual and play that way. Well, and I tell you what, boys, I thought it as we go back to sectionals. Number one, what a challenging group of teams you had there that day. I was looking back with, obviously, Roland Story and South Hamilton shooting like they did. South Central Calhoun had a really nice day. Randy Boyes shoot a 356 that day. Now, the positive that came out of that was Jace Coleman moving on. And we'll talk about Jace here in just a few. But take me back to the sectional meet a little bit. Overall, what are the boys thinking? What did you think? They got a chance to play once or twice, at least over there. Conditions were good. Actually, I thought we'd do just a little bit better. Means we've played Roland Story and South Ham. At South Ham, just, I think, a week prior to that. And getting settled in, a lot of the boys drew some of the same kids that they drew in sectionals. So it shouldn't be unfamiliar. I'm being unfamiliar with them. But it just comes down to trying to bear down when you have to. And you need those scores. And a couple of the boys shot nice. And we needed that effort that we had at South Hamilton right down to the end. Well, Jace Coleman was able to advance then to the district meet that was held on Monday. Tell me about thoughts on what was Jace feeling going into Monday's meet? Well, Jace has had a busy week. And we had graduations and his graduation party and making rounds. Right after graduation, they went down. And the night before, and the meet was in jeopardy of even playing it if they had got another shot of rain. But that's the kind of kid he is. He's won the battle through any condition that there is, because that's just the way we play. And be it cold or rain or any kind of condition and being able to adapt to it, and that's probably one of his strong points. So whatever the condition was on there, I knew he would do his best. And he drew a couple familiar foes that were in our group, which made it kind of interesting, too, because we get along with the coaches. And maybe the best guy win, play your 18 holes and then go from there. Did he feel pretty good walking off the course? I mean, finishing a tie for 13th is not a bad way to wrap up your golf career. No, he's a true competitor.

Anybody would like to have six kids just like him on your team. But I don't know what's happened like that. You've got all the glitches along the way that you have to battle and work out. And but to have kids like him, I mean, they come one on 100. Yeah, solid outing, obviously, for Jay's no question. Yeah. Well, let's talk about the girls program now a little bit, coach. We knew going in just from looking at the teams that were going to be there that this was going to be a really, really challenging meet. I mean, the Rolling Stories Grundy Center, I know had a fantastic season. PCM always has good girls golf. Was really impressed, though, to see how the girls kind of wrap things up. I know Olivia Coleman right there from potentially moving on to the next round. And I know a little disappointment there. But wow, what an effort I thought the girls put forth. Finishing six in that group, to me, is not a bad thing to hold your head down. Oh, no. Following Olivia last two or three holes, we knew with this Kodiak scoring that we knew that she was going to be right there on the line of being able to go or not. And Harry said, coming right down to the last hole, I mean, if she can par that or better, she would probably be in. And I think it was her second shot. She hit a tree, and it came back at her, but she made the best of it. And a huge disappointment for her to miss going by one stroke.

But the round before that, I think she birdied that very same hole, hole number nine at Story City. So it's going to be hard to top that. But I know her heart dropped there a little bit when the end came, and it finally came out. But that's where we need to improve. And to me, golfing at a meet like that with that level of competition, that's the way you need to bring it next year. Every meet that you play, have fun, but you can still play that game and let it show at the end with your scores. So yeah, I was very happy with the girls. Clara had a good year. She learned how to use that driver a little bit better, and she's not scared to swing it. And Lydia Longhorn steadily increased her ability and plan. And Matt, he played well, coming down to the end there. And we was going to give it all we got, and it is what it is the way it happened. And it was kind of enjoyment to go to all the graduations and give them another pat on the back for what they achieve this year. Yeah, no doubt about it. Randy, we'll wrap up the season with you here in a couple of weeks. Thanks for some time talking post-season. And I can't believe we're already here, but we'll wrap her up here shortly. All right, thanks, Ryan. You bet. Randy Johnson and joining us. Audien Golf here on Coaches Corner.
