
The Madrid baseball team built an early lead and held on late to secure a 4-3 win over Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center in a West Central Activities Conference matchup Monday, June 29, at home.
The Tigers struck first and maintained control in the early innings, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first before adding single runs in the second and third to take a 4-0 lead.
ACGC chipped away, plating one run in the third and adding two more in the fifth to make things interesting, but Madrid’s pitching and defense held firm down the stretch to preserve the one-run victory.
Brady Springer collected three hits, scored a run and stole two bases.
Eli Petersen finished with a hit and two RBIs, while Kole Deppe added a hit and drove in a run.
Will Atkinson crossed the plate twice for Madrid, and Landon Lenehan added a run.
Emerson Bridgewater and Deppe each contributed a hit.
Bridgewater struck out nine and earned the win.
Saturday: Madrid 6, West Sioux 5
Madrid also competed in a pair of games Saturday at Hess-Limber Field in Estherville.
In Game 1, the Tigers earned a thrilling 6-5 victory over West Sioux.
Madrid scored early with one run in the first and three in the second before adding insurance runs in the sixth and seventh.
West Sioux responded with runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings, but Madrid held on for the win.
Kolbie Owens led the offense with two hits, three RBIs and a run scored, while Levi Kockler added two hits and an RBI.
Deppe scored twice, and Springer tallied two hits and a run.
McCoy Cooley and Mason Morman each scored, with Morman also driving in a run.
Kockler started on the mound and struck out four, while Conner Pettiecord came on in relief to strike out three and pick up the victory.
In Game 2, Madrid fell to Estherville Lincoln Central 13-6 to finish the day.
Madrid now sits at 10-15 overall and 7-11 in conference play as it approaches the end of the regular season.
The Tigers will face a tough test to close out the conference schedule, traveling to top-ranked Pleasantville (27-1 overall, 18-0 conference) for a doubleheader.
