Madrid baseball sweeps West Central Valley

The Madrid baseball team’s bats came alive Tuesday, June 16, as the Tigers swept a West Central Conference doubleheader from West Central Valley, winning 12–0 in five innings in Game 1 and following with a 17–7 victory in six innings in the nightcap.

The Madrid baseball team’s bats came alive Tuesday, June 16, as the Tigers swept a West Central Conference doubleheader from West Central Valley, winning 12–0 in five innings in Game 1 and following with a 17–7 victory in six innings in the nightcap. 

Game 1: Madrid 12, West Central Valley 0 (5 innings) 

Madrid set the tone early and never let up in the opener, scoring in every inning en route to a five-inning shutout. 

The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning, added one in the second, two in the third, and broke the game open with six runs in the fifth to seal the victory. 

Mason Morman led the offense with two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI, while Kolbie Owens contributed a hit, two runs, and two RBIs.  

Kole Deppe added a hit, two runs scored, and an RBI. 

Brady Springer recorded a hit, two runs scored, and an RBI, while Cayden Loerzel and Conner Pettiecord each drove in a run.  

McCoy Cooley also had an RBI, and Landon Lenehan and Liam Tjernagel each crossed the plate. 

Pettiecord was dominant, tossing a complete-game shutout and striking out three to secure the win. 

Game 2: Madrid 17, West Central Valley 7 (6 innings) 

The offensive surge continued in the second game as Madrid pounded out 17 runs. 

The Tigers scored once in the first, then erupted for five runs in the second and three more in the third.  

They added two runs in the fourth and capped the scoring with six runs in the sixth inning. 

West Central Valley answered, scoring one run in both the second and third innings, then putting together a four-run fourth and adding one more in the fifth. 

Madrid’s lineup once again delivered across the board.  

Pettiecord collected three hits, scoring twice, driving in two runs, and stealing a base.  

Owens also had three hits and two RBIs. 

Deppe drove in four runs, while Emerson Bridgewater contributed a hit and three RBIs. 

Eli Petersen added two hits and scored three times, and Morman scored three runs and drove in one. 

Springer scored twice and added an RBI, while Levi Kockler chipped in with a hit and a run scored.  

Lenehan and Tjernagel also contributed runs. 

Bridgewater started on the mound and struck out four, while Zach Newell earned the win in relief with five strikeouts. 

With the sweep, Madrid improves to 8–7 overall and 6–5 in conference play. West Central Valley drops to 4–13 overall and 1–9 in the conference. 

The Tigers will host Perry (6-9) in a non-conference matchup on Thursday, June 18, with first pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
