Madrid softball splits doubleheader

The Madrid softball team came away with a split in a West Central Activities Conference doubleheader Tuesday, June 16, defeating West Central Valley 8–3 in the opener before falling 8–2 in the nightcap at Madrid High School.

The Madrid softball team came away with a split in a West Central Activities Conference doubleheader Tuesday, June 16, defeating West Central Valley 8–3 in the opener before falling 8–2 in the nightcap at Madrid High School. 

Game 1: Madrid 8, West Central Valley 3 

The Tigers scored twice in the first inning and adding three more runs in the second to build a 5–2 lead.  

They continued to add insurance with one run in the fourth and two in the fifth, while limiting West Central Valley to a pair of runs in the first and one in the fifth. 

Audrey Brown hit a home run and a double and had three hits total, scoring once, and driving in four runs.  

Surratt had two hits and an RBI, while Samantha Springer contributed a hit, a run scored, and an RBI.  

Tilly Sweet and Ashlyn Burkhart each drove in a run, and Hadley Mickle and Rylee Borcherding added hits. 

Kiera Alt chipped in two hits and scored twice, while Elliana Tjernagel scored two runs. Giana Tjernagel and Lucy Schealler each added a run scored. 

Surratt struck out five batters in a complete-game victory. 

Game 2: West Central Valley 8, Madrid 2 

In the second game, West Central Valley won and earned a split of the doubleheader. 

Brown had a hit and drove in a run, while Burkhart added an RBI.  

Surratt and Alt each recorded a hit. 

Surratt turned in another complete-game effort, striking out three despite taking the loss. 

With the split, Madrid moves to 14–5 overall and 7–4 in conference play.  

West Central Valley stands at 7–5 overall and 3–3 in the conference. 

Madrid will return to action Thursday, June 18, when it hosts Perry (1-14) in a non-conference game. 

The game will be broadcast on KWBG, FM 101.5, AM 1590 and will stream on kwbglive.com with sports director Ryan Wendt on the call.
