
The Madrid boys’ track and field team won the team championship with 116 points at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Colfax, Thursday, May 14, qualifying 8 events for the state track meet.
Jevyn Severson dominated the throws, winning both the shot put (50-8) and the discus (161-2) to sweep the events to earn automatic berths to state in those events.
Tyler Sonnenfelt captured gold in the 200-meter dash (22.46) and earned an automatic berth to state.
The Tigers claimed gold in both the 4×100-meter and 4×200-meter relays, with the same core group of athletes leading the charge.
In the 4×100, Kinnick Grimm, Loken Velky, Jake Sawyer and Sonnenfelt raced to a winning time of 43.99 seconds and an automatic berth to state.
That same quartet returned in the 4×200 relay with a first-place finish in 1:31.54 and an automatic berth to state.
In the shuttle hurdle relay, the team of Will Atkinson, Sawyer, Chase Perkins and Grimm ran 1:03.30 to secure another gold medal and earning an automatic berth to state.
In the 4×800 relay, the Tigers finished second in 8:29.63 with Henry Hudnall, Caleb Berberich, Kris Petersen and Cavin Pehl, earning an at-large berth to state in the event.
Berberich also placed fourth in the 800-meter run (2:03.84), and that time was good enough to qualify for state with an at-large berth.

The Tigers will compete all three days of the Iowa High School State Track and Field Meet Thursday- Saturday, May 21-23, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Sonnenfelt will run in the 200-meter dash at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Severson will compete in the shot put at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
The 4×800-meter relay will compete at 12:10 p.m. Thursday, and the shuttle hurdle relay will compete at 2:05 p.m.
The 4×200-meter relay will run at 11:30 a.m. Friday, and Severson will also compete in the discus at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
The 4×100-meter relay will compete at 12:55 p.m. Friday.
Finally, Berberich will run in the 800-meter run at 11:05 a.m. Saturday.
