Madrid girls qualify 12 events for state track meet

The Madrid girls' track and field team won the team championship with 137 points at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Colfax, Thursday, May 14, qualifying 12 events for the state track meet.

The Madrid girls’ track and field team won the team championship with 137 points at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Colfax, Thursday, May 14, qualifying 12 events for the state track meet. 

Paige Richards won the 100-meter dash title in 12.84 seconds and followed it up with another gold in the 200-meter dash at 26.23. 

Richards added a third championship by winning the long jump with a leap of 17-9.50. 

Lauren Dvorak swept both throwing events, winning the shot put with a throw of 39-1.50 and the discus at 129-11. 

In the 4×800-meter relay, the team of Hannah Brandhorst, Charis Peasley, Madelyn Grothus and Katelyn Brandhorst won the race in 10:10.06. 

First-place finishers earned automatic berths for state in those events. 

Four events earned at-large berths for the state meet. 

Grothus placed third in the 3000-meter run (11:00.96) and fourth in the 1500-meter run (5:00.01), qualifying for state in both events. 

Hannah Brandhorst took fifth in the 1500 in 5:05.94 and also qualified for state. 

Katelyn Brandhorst added an individual fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:22.87), good enough to qualify for state. 

The shuttle hurdle relay of Iyla Fine, Charlotte Schaeller, Ashlyn Burkhardt and Adelyn White finished second in 1:11.71 and earned an at-large berth for state. 

The distance medley relay of Kimee Smith, Jaela Hansen, Richards, and Katelyn Brandhorst placed second in 4:21.90 and also earned an at-large berth for state.

The Tigers will compete all three days of the Iowa High School State Track and Field Meet Thursday- Saturday, May 21-23, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. 

The shuttle hurdle relay will compete at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 21, and Dvorak will also compete in the shot put at 9 a.m. 

Grothus will run in the 3000-meter run at 9:40 a.m. Thursday. 

Richards will run in the 200-meter dash at 10:40 a.m. Thursday. 

The 4×800-meter relay will compete at 11:20 a.m. Thursday. 

On Friday, May 22, Dvorak will compete in the discus at 9 a.m. and the distance medley relay will also run at 9 a.m. 

Finally Katelyn Brandhorst will run in the 800-meter run at 10:35 a.m. Saturday, and Grothus and Hannah Brandhorst will run in the 1500-meter run at 2:40 p.m.
