Madrid football stays unbeaten with comeback win

The Madrid football team remained perfect on the season Friday, October 2, rallying in the second half for a 14-12 victory over Lynnville-Sully at Madrid High School.

The Madrid football team remained perfect on the season Friday, October 2, rallying in the second half for a 14-12 victory over Lynnville-Sully at Madrid High School. 

Lynnville-Sully struck first, scoring six points in the opening quarter.  

The Hawks carried that 6-0 advantage into halftime after neither team scored in the second quarter. 

Both teams found the end zone in the third quarter.  

Lynnville-Sully added six points to increase its total to 12, while Madrid answered with a touchdown and extra point to make it a 12-7 game entering the fourth quarter. 

Madrid completed the comeback with seven points in the final period, pulling ahead 14-12 and holding on for the two-point victory. 

Will Atkinson carried the load for the Madrid offense, rushing 30 times for 143 yards and both of the Tigers’ touchdowns. 

Quarterback Kole Deppe completed 3-of-5 passes for seven yards and added 39 yards on 12 rushing attempts.  

Jevyn Severson carried six times for 24 yards, while Kinnick Grimm had four carries for four yards. 

Logan Bogardus caught all three of Madrid’s completed passes for seven yards. 

Emerson Bridgewater led the defense with 4.5 tackles.  

Quinten Moore recorded four tackles, while Max Fowler finished with 3.5 tackles, including two tackles for loss. 

Bogardus added 3.5 tackles on defense.  

Grimm recorded three tackles, including one tackle for loss. 

The Tigers improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in district play, while Lynnville-Sully dropped to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the district. 

The Tigers will return home Friday, October 9, to face Martensdale-St. Mary’s, which enters the game at 5-1 overall and 4-1 in district play. 

Friday night’s Madrid-Martensdale-St. Mary’s game will be broadcast on KWBG FM 101.5 and AM 1590, with KWBG Sports Director Ryan Wendt on the call.
