The Madrid girls’ basketball team opened its season Friday, November 21, rolling past Ackley-Geneva/Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock, 76-14, at Madrid High School.
The Tigers wasted no time setting the tone, racing to a 24-1 lead after the first quarter and extending the margin to 46-3 by halftime.
Madrid continued playing strong through the second half, building a 64-9 advantage after three quarters before closing out the lopsided victory.
Mayzie Surratt led the charge with 25 points on an efficient 9-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc and a perfect 2-of-2 at the free-throw line.
Laura Eagleton added 23 points, hitting 9-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from deep.
Alyssa Sonnenfeld chipped in seven points, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor.
Samantha Springer grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists without a turnover, while Audrey Brown added five boards and four assists.
Eagleton contributed five rebounds and five assists, posting a 2.5 assist-to-turnover ratio.
With the win, Madrid improves to 1-0 on the season. AGWSR falls to 0-1.
The Tigers will travel to Collins-Maxwell (0-0) for a 6 p.m. tipoff tonight.
