Marie Peterson

BOONE, Iowa—Marie C. Peterson, 72, of Marshalltown and formerly of Boone, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2026 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Following Marie’s wishes cremation has taken place.

Marie was born March 25, 1954, in Boone, the daughter of Marvin and Charlotte (Hall) Sundquist. She attended school in Boone and graduated with the Class of 1972 from Boone High School.

Marie was united in marriage to Darrell Peterson on December 22, 1979 in Boone. She was a long-time member of the Cornerstone Alliance Church in Boone, where she attended regularly while growing up and living in Boone.

Marie worked as a waitress at several restaurants in Boone, before becoming a cook at Westhaven Community, where she retired from.

She has resided at the Iowa Veterans Home since 2018. Marie enjoyed playing BINGO and winning prizes at the home. She has always enjoyed cooking and baking; she would make the meals when all the family would get together for the holidays. Marie wasn’t afraid to tell the cooks at the Veterans Home they needed to do better.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Darrell in 2019; an infant son; brother, James Sundquist; father and mother-in-law, Howard and Marion Peterson; brothers-in-law, Eugene Lee and Tim Peterson; and a nephew, Jon Lee.

Marie is survived by her sister, Birdie Lee of Colton, South Dakota; nephew, Joseph Lee of Dell Rapids, South Dakota; niece, Jennie (Kevin) Strom of Colton, South Dakota; and four great-nephews, Luke Strom, Elijah Strom, Nathan Strom and Joshua Strom all of Colton, South Dakota.

Other family members that survive Marie include a brother-in-law, David (Cindi) Peterson of Boone; sister-in-law, Jenny Huntrods of Huxley; niece, Ashley (Justin) Stoner of Ankeny; nephew, Nathan (Abby) Huntrods of Huxley; nephew, Travis (Jill) Peterson of Nevada; great-nephew, Logan Huntrods of Huxley; great-niece, Lilly Huntrods of Huxley; and great-nephew, Scott Peterson of Nevada.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at 2:00 PM in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Drive, Adel, IA 50003, with Jeff Lee officiating. When coming to the service, do not arrive sooner than 1:45 PM and please park in the funeral procession near the office. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Cornerstone Alliance Church, 111 6th Street, Boone, IA 50036, Boone Area Humane Society, 228 West 16th Street, Boone, IA 50036, or to Iowa River Hospice, 502 Plaza Heights Road, Marshalltown, IA 50158.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone. Online condolences may be left to Marie’s family at www.schroedermemorialchapel.com
