with us on coaches corner KWB G going to talk some cross country today with boon head coach Cass Wharson as he toy doors get ready for well and not even no jokes aside but the home stretch of the season because conference meet coming up tomorrow at Northpoke and honestly temperatures look great Cass it might be one of those conference meets we look back on and say what a beautiful weather day we'll get to that here in just a second but girls and guys have been busy coach start with the girls and had a chance back on the third you took them up to Waverly tell us about Warburg College yeah Waverly that Saturday was a beautiful morning to to go out and race you know we we've been dealing with all the rain and stuff and um you know I it was actually a little warmer than what I had expected um but you know sixties are better than what we'll be seeing today where it's near 90 um and the girls ran great I thought uh we came in I think it was 18th out of 31 so we were right kind of in there in the middle um and there was some great competition there was about seven now there was like eight ranked uh three 18 including us um and then there was like seven ranked four 18s and the top ranked two 18 so the girls had plenty of good competition to compete with um we saw four uh either career or season pr so that was encouraging to see that we're still uh dropping times and um heading in the right direction in that area well and what I thought was impressive to Cass and you and I kind of visited about this at volleyball last week but coach you had three girls go under 20 minutes I mean you want to talk about the time of year to to start chopping away at time boy that what a great day for those three yeah and for and it was good to see Briella finally crack 20 because I know that uh that's I mean cracking 20 you're practically right there in that top 15 when you go to districts um it seems like times just keep getting faster year after year and uh it's like 20 sub 20 is where you got to be now if you want to make state um but uh just kind of where she was at the beginning of the season where um she was recovering from a tibia injury that she couldn't do much of the offseason stuff um just to see her go sub 20 on I wouldn't say it was that hard of a course but it was a fast course and it was a unique course because you're you're running you're basically running through people's backyards it seems like so it's different than basically any other course that people had seen and um so you're running through backyards you're running through side yards and then you're running around a prairie area um and then uh just kind of um the site to watch college races before as you're preparing for your own race that's that's a different um atmosphere on race day morning too Cass what did the girls kind of say to you as you guys were heading home about just the experience of being there um you know there's there's a lot of times I'll ask Emma um like what did you think of the course and breach and into like they liked it it was different um but because it's also a college course they had multiple signs out there so if high school or college guys run 8k college girls run 6k so they'll have posts posted on the course but there's like two or three different signs and so you look at those and like you're just focusing on the race you're not focusing on okay I'm at the 3k but really I'm at whatever k or the 2 mile or whatever because your it just depends on what part of the course you're on compared to maybe what a college guy or college girl would be running um and so that was just one thing that they mentioned they had no idea how where they were how far they had gone how far they have left to go um uh but I think they liked it and especially just the point where they did pick up um going uh sub 20 or getting a career slash season pr um I thought it was uh I thought they enjoyed it and just being on a Saturday where you don't have to worry about classes and um it really wasn't that early of a morning to leave compared to when we left for uh Johnston um for our first meet of the season because we got up and we left at like 545 for Johnston and on Saturday uh we left at 730 so it wasn't as late of a night the night before to try and go to bed early um and then waking up early that true boys had a chance coach back on the October the 6th to run at Eagle Grove and uh 13 teams were there and coach finished up fifth place had uh Austin Felder with a 1946 Jonathan Myers had a 2008 Cam Lehmann with uh a 2013 tell me about the boys last time out at Eagle Grove yeah Eagle Grove I thought that was the boys best uh best meet that they've run off season um again there was really good competition I thought but it was about the course on that day uh that was probably the most challenging course they had run all season um if if there is any perspective to the course you can imagine winter set or Perry's course um and they had this they had this hill that they had to climb twice and I thought they really attacked that hill pretty uh competitively um as we just kind of talked about you attacked the hill and mentally when you get to the top your your body is just going to want to just slow down because I'm catching your breath as you get to the top but I'd seen this in the middle school race and I told the middle school girls this is that um for for where they're at in their age is that there'll be kids that once they get to the top they're either going to stop and walk or they're going to really slow down to try and catch their breath and it's like that's got to be your opportunity to kind of catch those uh those kids and make up um make up a space now high school guys weren't going to do that obviously they're not going to get to the top of the hill and just feel like I need this I need a second um and that that's just something that they can't that they mentally have to push through that they can't think I need a second to um but they they went up that hill and on and down the hills and then right back up that giant hill and I thought they did that pretty well well it was just there was I think there was 13 teams there two cast which was neat to see a bunch of different competition because you guys are going to see some of the best in the state now coming up tomorrow at Northpoke with the uh Raccoon River Conference meet I know on one hand kids are probably thinking boy this is going to be a real challenge but on the second hand you got to get pumped for something like this don't you yeah um and you know the good thing about going to Perry is that or uh going to Eagle Grove is that you've got those hills and Northpoke is flat and wherever we go for districts whether it's Clear Lake or Winterset it's not going to be flat so we we have to get adjusted to running those hills and be willing to fight against the competition that will be at those courses and so tomorrow when we race uh race our conference teams they're all pretty good um and we just got to be willing to go out and uh and compete with um with Northpoke Northpoke and ADM Ballard and Winterset and uh just see what we can do so well and I think too is that you're going to get a good day too Cass I mean let's be honest we haven't had a bunch of great perfect days to run I'm not saying tomorrow's going to be perfect but it looks pretty darn good weather wise yeah and you know maybe we haven't had the perfect conditions whether the course is wet or um or we've just cancelled a meet because of how wet it is um but we still get in good workouts because we've been fortunate that it hasn't really rained too much while we're supposed to have practice um but so we just kind of we kind of go at race pace basically on days when we were supposed to race and uh and we just push hard yeah that's all you can do yeah all you can do Cass best of luck tomorrow over in all of them and now we'll look forward to talking to you here in a couple of weeks all right thank you you bet Cass Wherson again joining us boomcross country here on coaches corner
