BOONE, Iowa—Congratulations to our DAISY Award winners, Morgan Umthun, Boone County Family Medicine South and Public Health, and Alison Stevens, Boone County Hospital Surgery. They were recognized during a Nurses Week Recognition Breakfast on Friday, May 8, surrounded by peers and family.
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award honors the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after his death from complications of the autoimmune disease ITP in 1999, as a public way to thank nurses for the care shown to Patrick and his family.
Morgan was nominated for her outstanding communication, teamwork, and positive attitude that supports colleagues across departments and helps ensure strong patient care. Her nominator shared that Morgan consistently follows up, approaches every interaction with kindness, and makes teamwork enjoyable—even celebrating completed tasks with a virtual high‑five and a funny GIF.
Alison was recognized for her dedication, leadership, and willingness to go above and beyond for patients and coworkers. A coworker noted that she regularly picks up extra call, supports new team members, and demonstrates exceptional teamwork. Alison was also praised for rearranging an operating room setup so a mother could watch her baby’s birth—an act that exemplifies her compassionate care.
