The Boone girls’ cross country team placed seventh Saturday, August 29, at the Dragon Sunrise XC Invite held at the Johnston High School cross country course.

The Toreadors scored 201 team points and finished seventh in the 15-team field.

Boone finished ahead of Indianola, ADM, Winterset, Mason City, Bondurant-Farrar, Earlham, Martensdale-St. Marys and Ogden.

“I wanted to see where we stacked up among the other 3A teams in such a competitive field with teams like Johnston, Indianola, West Des Moines Dowling Catholic and Southeast Polk,” head coach Cass Warson said. “They competed and finished pretty well among the other 3A teams that were there.”

Senior Emma Thomas paced the Toreadors with a 20th-place finish in a time of 20:19.7.

Thomas was followed closely by sophomore Whitney Chesnut, who crossed the finish line in 20:26.5 to place 26th overall.

Boone’s pack continued to score valuable points as sophomore Reagan Morgan finished 35th in 20:43.2, while sophomore Briella Johnson placed 38th in 20:50.5.

Freshman Lyrica Colebank rounded out Boone’s scoring five with an 82nd-place finish in 23:29.9.

Additional runners for Boone included eighth-grader Chloe Chesnut, who finished 86th in 24:03.9, and senior Bryana Morgan, who placed 94th in 25:04.5.

Johnston captured the team championship with 37 points behind five runners finishing in the top 10.

Dallas Center-Grimes was second with 74 points, followed by Des Moines Christian with 81.

Southeast Polk and Dowling Catholic rounded out the top five.

The individual title went to Tenley Heidgerken of Dallas Center-Grimes, who won the race in 18:12.3.

“We have some veteran runners leading the way with Emma Thomas, Whitney Chesnut, Reagan Morgan and Briella Johnson. Then we have some youngsters towards the tail end of our scoring unit with Freshman Lyrica Colebank and eighth grader Chloe Chesnut. This was a good opportunity to give them a strong taste of a competitive 5K race.” Warson said.

Complete results were previously posted to kwbg.com

The Toreadors will travel to Madrid to run at Grants Woods Park at 5:20 p.m. Thursday, September 3.
